Tree Roots and Concrete: How Cary's Popular Landscape Trees Affect Driveways, Sidewalks, and Foundations

Ask any Cary homeowner what they love most about their neighborhood and mature trees are usually in the top three answers. The tree canopy is one of the defining features of the area — the mature hardwoods are a huge part of what makes properties feel established and valuable.

But trees and concrete don't always get along. Roots from certain species can lift driveway slabs, crack sidewalks, push against foundation walls, and even damage buried utility lines. The good news is: not all trees are equal offenders. Choosing the right tree for the right spot, and knowing which existing trees to watch, is the difference between a beautiful landscape and an expensive concrete repair.

Which trees cause the most concrete damage in the Piedmont

Silver maples, willows, sweetgums, hackberries, and Bradford pears are the most common trees that cause slab uplift and cracking when planted within 20 feet of concrete. The International Society of Arboriculture identifies shallow-rooted, fast-growing species as the leading cause of sidewalk and driveway damage in residential settings, and the Tree Care Industry Association maintains species-specific guidance on root pressure and hardscape interaction. Here's why these particular species land on the "avoid near concrete" list:

  • Silver maple — Aggressive shallow root system, fast growth, and a habit of sending surface roots directly under driveways and sidewalks. Mature silver maples can lift a concrete slab 2–3 inches over 15 years.
  • Willow (weeping and native) — Roots aggressively seek moisture, which means they head straight for foundation drains, sewer lines, and the wet soil under a slab. Not a good driveway neighbor.
  • Sweetgum — Massive surface roots that raise sidewalk sections and split driveway edges. Their spiky "gumball" seed pods are also a hazard on concrete walkways.
  • Hackberry — Fast growing, weak wooded, and prone to sending shallow roots long distances in search of moisture. Common in older neighborhoods.
  • Bradford pear — Not usually thought of as a concrete threat, but their shallow roots and structural weakness make them a liability near driveways and walkways.

Which trees are concrete-safe

The good news: plenty of beautiful trees have root systems that behave better around concrete. The USDA Plants Database is the definitive source for species-level growth habit, USDA zone fit, and root architecture — a good cross-reference for anything you're considering planting. The NC State Cooperative Extension also publishes tree-selection guides that flag hardscape compatibility explicitly.

  • Oak (white, willow, and red) — Deep tap roots that generally grow down instead of out. Slow growing and long lived. Requires 15+ feet of clearance from any slab.
  • Ginkgo — Very deep, well-behaved root system. Beautiful yellow fall color. Grows slowly but ages beautifully.
  • Japanese maple — Small, ornamental, and well-mannered roots. Safe within 6–8 feet of concrete for most cultivars.
  • Dogwood (flowering and Kousa) — Shallow but small root system. Won't lift a slab.
  • Crape myrtle — Popular in North Carolina for good reason. Deep roots, drought tolerant, and rarely a concrete issue.

How roots actually damage concrete

Trees don't crack concrete by pushing through it with brute force. Instead, they exploit weak points and existing conditions — root-induced failures are a combination of point-load stress and moisture-cycling fatigue, not a single-event break. Here's what that means practically:

  1. Subgrade displacement. As roots grow under a slab, they slowly push the compacted soil base out of the way. The slab loses support in that spot and cracks under load.
  2. Uplift. Large surface roots grow in diameter every year, expanding upward against the underside of the slab. Even a 1-inch root can lift a 4-inch driveway slab 2 inches out of level.
  3. Moisture cycling. Roots pull moisture from soil around them, then the surrounding soil expands and contracts more dramatically with rainfall. The uneven soil movement stresses the slab.
  4. Joint infiltration. Fine roots find expansion joints and cracks and grow into them. Once inside, they widen the joint from within.

Root barriers: the professional solution

If you have a tree you want to keep but it's close to a driveway, patio, or foundation, root barriers are a proven solution. A root barrier is a physical panel — usually 18–36 inches deep — installed vertically in the soil between the tree and the concrete. It forces roots to grow down instead of laterally under the slab.

Root barrier installation is one of the most cost-effective preventive investments a Cary homeowner can make when landscaping around existing concrete. It's much cheaper than replacing a driveway a few years down the road.
